Edo kiriko

江戸切子

Edo kiriko turns cuts in glass into a pattern of light. It rewards close viewing: the decoration is worked into the vessel rather than simply printed on its surface.

How the pattern is made

The cooperative describes a sequence of marking guide lines, cutting with wet diamond wheels, smoothing and polishing. On colour-layered glass, cuts expose the clearer glass beneath. Colour belongs to the glass layers themselves, rather than being paint added over the finished cuts.

A useful comparison with Satsuma kiriko

The cooperative distinguishes Edo kiriko’s sharply defined cuts and thin coloured layer from the thicker colour layer and graduated effect associated with Satsuma kiriko. This is a guide to traditions, not an authentication test: viewing one photograph is not enough to assign a maker or a place of production.

What to inspect in a glass

Compare the rhythm of repeated motifs, the clarity of intersections, the rim and the balance in the hand. Ask whether the glass is handmade, who cut it and what care the maker specifies. Do not infer dishwasher or heat resistance from the words “cut glass”. For workshops, use the cooperative’s member information to find the actual maker and confirm the class language and booking conditions.
